Founded by Lula Mae Sheffey, a black, woman entrepreneur who is just as brilliant as she is resilient, the store is the product of a deep passion for fashion that was sparked at an early age. Growing up on a farm in the small town of Moulton, Al, Lula’s mother made all of her clothing while her father ran his own businesses at home. Over the years, Lula learned the ins and outs of being a small-business owner and eventually became inspired to start making her own products to sell.
Fashion was her first love, next to her late husband Sam Sheffey Jr. who was extremely supportive of her career pursuit, and it took her all over the world from Korea, New York and Chicago to California and Atlanta on a journey to uncover the finest custom-made clothing to acquire. Simultaneously by day, she worked full-time in insurance sales to fuel her desires, which led to her being recognized as the top salesperson for her company after 24 years.
Putting in everything she could into her career by day, by night – she started selling the clothing she curated from her travelers from the trunk of her car. As business began to boom and her clientele began to build, Lula left her insurance job and made her grand foray into the fashion world to start Lula’s Closet in 1986 – making her one of few African American women entrepreneurs during this time period.
Taking her business on the road and filing to become a business and brand in 1996, Lula’s Closet first started hosting private showings in regional cities like Birmingham, AL and Atlanta, GA to continue building strong relationships with her customers. This led into her traveling throughout the country to attend events and conferences as a vendor, which allowed her to work and collaborate with a variety of organizations and sororities that built friendships and relationships to last a lifetime.
No matter what was thrown at Lula, she has always had an uncanny ability to pivot and create new solutions for what whatever stood in her way. To date, Lula has served a variety of high-profile customers including congresswomen, representatives of the country, and high-powered officials who hold executive positions within the community.

Although Lula thrives on traveling the world and sharing her love of fashion and infectious personality with others, the COVID-19 pandemic has delivered some devastating blows to the retail and brick-and-mortar worlds. With that, we’re pleased to announce the launch of “Lula’s Closet Online” – the beginning of a new era for designer fashion in North Alabama.
Though the e-commerce experience may operate a bit differently, we are steadfast in delivering the fabulous shopping experience our customers and friends have grown to love and look forward to , while also simultaneously growing our reach to new clients nationwide.
Lula is also in the process of prepping the business to be passed down to her loving grandchildren and family. With the business being rooted in Moulton, AL, a small tight knit community of friends and family, Lula knows they will keep the spirit of Lula’s Closet alive as they continue to travel, interact with existing customers and make more people around the world aware of the beautiful town she calls home.
